Power Restoration Full Speed Ahead at Suwannee Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC)

LIVE OAK, Fla., August 6, 2024 (8:00 a.m.) – Crews worked late into the night to restore power following Hurricane Debby. As of 7:00 a.m. today, power had been restored to over 6,300 consumers who lost power due to the storm. All substations have transmission service except for the Smith substation, serving the southwest portion of Lafayette County, including the town of Day. Duke continues to work diligently to have that service restored.

Local author and historical researcher Pat Hines (Pat Hines Mitchell) was invited to attend The ACCORD Film Festival and Book Signing - Commemorating the 60th anniversary signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in St. Augustine on July 1, at the ACCORD Civil Rights Museum.

Her book titled Christmas in the South: A Proud Southern Heritage, is about her Great-great-great-grandfather Christmas Hemming, who was born a slave, wound up being freed and became a land owner in Suwannee County, 640 acres to be exact.

Genetics studies confirmed what many anglers and biologists have believed for a long time – Florida bass are special! Florida’s most popular freshwater game fish has a new name. The American Fisheries Society established the Florida bass as a separate species from the largemouth bass. This means that in most of Florida (except the western Panhandle) what was known as a largemouth bass is now called a Florida bass.
