Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic

It is perplexing to consider what a difference sixty days can make. Just eight weeks ago, we welcomed springtime with plans of Easter, spring games, and leisurely activities that embody our area. Mission trips, high school proms and spring break vacations were being planned. The economy was growing, business seemed good and preparation for standardized testing in schools was a key concern for parents, students and educators.

An empty meat case is becoming the norm.                                    -SVT Photo

Staff Reports

The question Americans are asking, “Why are the store shelves empty if there are no shortages?” It was reported that at one of the dollar stores in Columbia County that when the truck carrying fresh supplies of toilet paper pulled in, customers practically mobbed the driver in the parking lot. People are fighting over toilet paper. When you walk into a store today, signs are all over, “limit two” or “limit one.” What is going on?

North Florida weighs in on COVID-19 ramifications
Officials, local businesses and community leaders speak out

By Tami Stevenson

The ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic are ever changing and far reaching to all walks of life on our planet. The hardest hit by the social distancing and economic shut-down seem to be the developed nations where people are used to going to work everyday, used to social gatherings and not used to not knowing if their livelihood is ever going to be the same again. For many, stress levels are up and bank accounts are low, although stimulus checks (economic impact payments) should begin to be deposited this week.

There appears to be some confusion about the Governor’s Executive Order (EO) 20-91 and City Ordinance #2020-2146 and its application within the City of Lake City as it relates to “attending religious services conducted in churches, synagogues and houses of worship”.

By Jeffry Boatright

If we have learned nothing else from the Coronavirus pandemic at this point, we have discovered that it has been accompanied by misconceptions and misinformation. We hear untruths and exaggerations from those who cultivate fear, but we are bombarded with propaganda and hearsay from those who minimize the threat. Most of us simply want to know the facts.

Can’t find sanitizer? Make it yourself
Sanitizing tips and recipes for family and hom

By Tami Stevenson

The chances of going to the grocery store with a list and coming home with everything on it is iffy right now, to say the least. In an effort to stop the spread of the highly contagious coronavirus (COVID-19), people are stock-piling food, toilet paper and everything else on the store shelves, it seems.
