Columbia County Sports Commission Says Rain Causes Cancellations, Delays at Babe Ruth Tournaments

Lake City, Fla., – Heavy rains washed out the first day of games at the Florida Babe Ruth State Softball Championships in Lake City, forcing tournament officials to move some games to Champions Park in Newberry.

The Southside Sports Complex was inundated with strong showers and thunderstorms Thursday, shortly after the first games of the day started, forcing players and spectators to seek shelter. Seeking a break in the storms that never arrived, the decision to move games to Newberry for the afternoon was made to help keep the tournament on schedule.

Columbia County Parks and Landscape crews pumped more than 1,000 gallons of water out of the Girls Softball Complex to get the fields ready for play on Friday. Games resumed, on time at 8am, Friday morning.

The Babe Ruth District 6 Baseball Tournament was delayed most of the day due to the rain, but was able to complete the first round of games. Games originally scheduled to begin at 9am did not see a first pitch until 4:30pm.

Both tournaments are back on schedule after the weather, and the weekend forecast looks promising.

These two events will draw 110 youth teams to Lake City, with an estimated 5,000 spectators expected to pass through the gates.

The Southside Sports Complex is located at 1963 SW Bascom Norris Drive in Lake City.
