World Blood Donor Day coming June 14

Submitted by Laura Bialeck, Community Development Coordinator

While blood donors are needed 365 days a year, one day on the calendar is set aside to honor them – June 14 is World Blood Donor Day.

In addition to the T-shirts, hats, cookies, juice and other tokens of appreciation that go to donors, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers will be hosting a special blood drive at its Lake City center. There will be hourly drawings for prizes, and food from Sonny’s, Bob Evan’s, Firehouse Subs, and others.

“Our donors are a select group, since only about five percent of Americans donate regularly” said LifeSouth’s NFL District Director, Lorrie Woods. “Increasing that figure by a single percentage point could do away with shortages”.

LifeSouth’s goal for the World Blood Donor Day promotion is fifty donors. The Lake City center is located at 833 SR 47 and will be open from 9am to 7pm that day.

Donors must be 17 or older, or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo ID is also required. LifeSouth supplies one hundred percent of the blood to the Lake City medical Center, VA Hospital, and Shands Lake Shore Regional Medical Center..
