New Protections for Law Enforcement Staff and Animals

Two bills passed the House and Senate last week, if signed by Governor DeSantis, they will further protect our law enforcement animals and their human counterparts.


SB 96 and SB 248 received final passage in the House and Senate last week. SB 96 increases the penalty from a third degree felony to a second degree felony for intentionally and knowingly causing harm to law enforcement animals.


If approved by the Governor, SB 96 will take effect October 1, 2019.


Senate Bill 248, exempts home addresses for law enforcement members and their families from public records disclosure. It also exempts telephone numbers, dates of birth, and photographs of active or former civilian personnel employed by a law enforcement agency; names, home addresses, telephone numbers, photographs, dates of birth, and places of employment of the spouses and children of such personnel; it also exempts the names and locations of schools and day care facilities attended by the children of such personnel.


If approved by the Governor, SB 248 will take effect July 1, 2019.
