WHITE SPRINGS – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park will host the 68th Annual Jeanie & Stephen Auditions, a State Competition to Award Scholarships to Male & Female Vocalists, on January 18 & 19, 2019. The popular songs of Stephen Foster and the classical and operatic compositions of American music will be highlighted at the Stephen Foster Museum.

The festivities will begin Friday evening with the Golden Slipper Gala from 6 to 10 pm at the Women’s Center and Garden Club in Lake City, FL. Highlights of the evening include catered dinner, silent auction, introduction of the 2019 Jeanie and Stephen Contestants, and beautiful music by our 2018 Jeanie and Stephen Winners.

On Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the Stephen Foster Museum the contestants will audition for the title of “Jeanie” and “Stephen” in a public concert before a panel of judges.

Competitors will wear 1854-style formal attire, keeping with the theme of the event, which is named for a song Stephen Foster wrote for his wife, “Jeanie, with the Light Brown Hair.” This scholarship event is a tribute to Foster, a 19th century composer who wrote some of America’s best-known songs, including, “Oh! Susanna” and “Beautiful Dreamer.” Foster also wrote “Old Folks at Home,” which was adopted as the official Florida state song in 1935.

The event attracts contestants from throughout the state of Florida and is sponsored by the Florida Federation of Music Clubs and the Stephen Foster Citizen Support Organization. Competitors must sing one song composed by Stephen Foster, and a song of their choice written by American composers. The Jeanie and Stephen winners and 2 runner-ups receive scholarships to further their vocal studies. More information about the Florida Federation of Music and the competition rules can be found on their website at

On Sunday January 20, 2019, we will host a concert in celebration of National Stephen Foster Day. The concert will begin at 2 p.m. in the Museum. Refreshments will be available after the concert.

Admission to the event(s) is free with park admission of $5 per vehicle, up to eight passengers per car. For more information, call (386) 397-4408. To learn more, visit
