Escaped Prisoner Caught After Six Hour Manhunt

Lake City, Fla., - LCPD: Over the weekend, the Lake City Police Department received notice from the Work Release Center in Lake City that an inmate had removed his ankle monitor near the intersection of US 41 and US 90. LCPD units responded to the area where the ankle monitor, which had been work by inmate Matthew W Roberts (12/28/1995), was found on the ground. Alerts were sent to other Agencies in the area. A deputy from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reported spotting Roberts further west on US 90 near NW Hackney Pl, but Roberts fled into a nearby apartment complex.

LCPD and CCSO units established a perimeter around the area and bloodhound tracking teams from the Florida Department of Corrections responded to the area. The K9 teams began tracking Roberts from the last place he was seen. Roberts was located twice but was able to flee on foot to evade capture. After a third sighting, Roberts again fled from the tracking team, but Sergeant Ivan Useche and Corporal Brett Sullivan were able to intercept him and detain him.

“We were able to successfully apprhened Matthew Roberts after a tracking effort that lasted just over six and a half hours,” said Dr. Argatha Gilmore, Chief of Police. “This was possible thanks to the cooperative effort between LCPD, CCSO, and FDOC.”

LCPD arrested Roberts under an Escaped Prisoner warrant which FDOC had issued during the night. He was transported to the Columbia County Jail where he is currently being held without bond pending transfer back to a correctional institute. Additional charges are pending from LCPD for Criminal Mischief due to damage Roberts caused during his escape and resisting arrest. Roberts was originally arrested and convicted in Charlotte County for a pair of armed convenience store robberies and resisting arrest.
