MLK Day celebrated – 50 years after his death

By Tami Stevenson

The annual remembrances of Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. held greater significance this year as 2018 marks the 50th year after his assassination on April 4, 1968, and the annual holiday fell on the actual day of his birth, January 15.

Parades and memorial services were held across the nation and in nearly every North Florida town and city to honor the man that spoke about peace and equality. His nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s led many in a different direction, believing, like King, there is a better way. Content of character was key with Dr. King. He put it best when he said,

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
