Suspect identified in officer involved shooting

MAYO, Fla. - The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is identifying a suspect in an officer involved shooting that took place yesterday, as Joseph Molnar, 62.  Molnar, a Lafayette County resident is in critical condition at Shands Hospital.  

Officers responded to a report of a man with a firearm in the area of 1368 SE County Road 420 in Branford, FL.   Upon arrival deputies were confronted by Molnar.   The subject pointed a weapon at officers and failed to follow commands from law enforcement to drop the weapon.  Lafayette County Deputies requested backup assistance from the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.  When the SWAT team arrived, Molnar began firing at deputies.  Deputies fired back and he was shot.

At the request of Lafayette and Suwannee County Sheriff’s Offices, FDLE is conducting an independent investigation to determine the facts of the officer involved shooting and will provide that information to the state attorney.
